Teo + Perperis – Embracing Contrasts
At Teo + Perperis Architects, the goal is simple yet profound: to blend architecture with interior design, ensuring each project they touch is holistic and harmoniously integrated. This small boutique studio specialises in residential alterations and new developments, crafting spaces that resonate with those who inhabit them. "Our focus is on attending to the full scope of the project, ensuring every detail is meticulously considered from start to finish," says Cheng, the director at the firm.
Their latest project, in Middle Park, was designed around their clients intention to maximise land use while maintaining a generous outdoor entertainment space. The project not only meets the client's needs but transcends them, creating a home that feels expansive yet intimate, with exquisite detailing both inside and out.
The inspiration for this project's material palette and the interplay of light and dark themes came directly from the client’s taste. "The contrasting materials were inspired by the client's affinity for bold colours and textures," Cheng explains. This choice has resulted in a striking visual narrative that runs throughout the home, providing a dynamic yet cohesive aesthetic.
Guiding the design of the window furnishings, Teo + Perperis Architects aimed to soften the architectural elements to create a bridge between the built environment and the furniture. "The window furnishings were primarily guided by us. Our main goal was to enhance the homely feel, making the architecture more approachable and integrated," says Cheng. Decisions on where to place curtains or blinds are meticulously thought out, balancing functionality with aesthetic considerations. The result is a seamless blend that enhances privacy and light control while contributing to the overall style of the home.
One of the standout features of this residence is its masterful use of textures and colours. "My favourite aspect is the interplay between different textures and colours, and how it contrasts yet complements the old and new elements of the house," Cheng reveals. This approach not only highlights the unique architectural features but also creates an engaging sensory experience for residents and visitors alike.
When asked about the current trends in both architecture and window furnishings, Cheng notes a move towards floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains and curved walls. These elements add a layer of sophistication and fluidity to spaces, making them feel more open and airy while providing a modern touch that aligns with contemporary design preferences.
This project by Teo + Perperis Architects is a clear illustration of how thoughtful design can transform a space, proving that attention to detail and a deep understanding of clients' preferences are key to creating environments that are not only functional but also artistically inspiring.
