Building Trust through Commercial Estimation • KJ in Focus
After navigating the intricacies of the travel world for over 15 years, Kirsten, affectionately known as "KJ," decided to make a significant career change. From ensuring travellers get their best experiences to guaranteeing that Lovelight's commercial projects are precisely estimated, her transition has been as meticulous as her work.
As the Team Leader of the Commercial Estimating Team, KJ's daily dance with numbers and plans is a testament to precision. An average day for her involves deep-diving architectural plans, juggling with Excel spreadsheets, and comprehending price lists. This rigorous routine is punctuated by moments of collaboration and brainstorming, as she works hand in hand with her colleagues in Estimating, Sales, and Commercial Operations. Together, they strive to decipher product specifications, determine pricing, and troubleshoot challenges.
Her past in the travel realm has given her a unique perspective. Estimating window furnishings for hotels, the intricacies they offer, especially when dealing with international chains and their elusive fabric specifications, presents a delightful challenge. “ I love the challenge of working on Hotels, they always have challenging curtain fabrics to quote on. If they are a large international chain their specifications are always fabrics that are difficult to get to Australia which adds complexity on the procurement side.”
Luckily KJ relishes these hurdles because when it comes to estimating on large projects there is never a one-size-fits-all all solution. Pacifica in Auckland stands out as a particularly daunting task; Architectural complexities combined with the unforeseen challenges of COVID made it an endeavour of tenacity and innovation. Triangular windows, a product of the building's unique architectural ribbon, posed a riddle – a window shape that standard window furnishings couldn't accommodate. Yet, true to Lovelight's spirit and KJ's perseverance, from her office in South Yarra they found solutions that could be implemented on the ground in New Zealand.
When asked about the core of her role in estimating, KJ emphasizes understanding. Grasping the essence of what product is needed forms the bedrock of her approach. With that clarity, the myriad variables become manageable, and she collaborates with suppliers to secure the most competitive prices.
Beyond the numbers and the challenges, what truly fills KJ's cup is the camaraderie she shares with her colleagues at Lovelight. And for those who have had the pleasure of working alongside her, the feeling is mutual. Her meticulous nature, combined with her years of varied experiences, makes her an invaluable asset to the Lovelight family.
For KJ, “It's not just about getting the numbers right; it's about building trust, one estimate at a time.”
